2007 Patz & Hall Chenoweth Ranch Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

750ml wine bottle 750ml wine bottle

Increasingly well known as one of California’s preeminent vineyard managers, Charlie Chenoweth has developed this small Pinot Noir vineyard on a knoll above his family’s homestead estate. Planted to five expressive Dijon clones in loamy Goldridge soil, we designated this site as a single-vineyard bottling in 2004. Charlie Chenoweth has also been able to bring us some superlative Pinot Noir fruit over the years for our Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir blend from his Sonoma County vineyard development projects.

The Vineyard:
Like several of our finest vineyards, Chenoweth Ranch was originally cultivated as an apple orchard. Planted on the far western edge of the Russian River Valley appellation, this beautiful 7-acre vineyard is located in Green Valley, one of the region’s coolest areas, and is farmed exclusively for Patz & Hall. Though enjoying excellent sunlight from it slight south-facing orientation, the vineyard is sheltered by steep western hills, which protect the grapes from late-afternoon baking, while helping the fruit to retain lively natural acidity. This meticulously cared-for vineyard consistently produces fresh strawberry and Bing cherry flavors.

Tasting Notes:
Big, rich and mouth-filling, the 2007 bottling is plush and lingering, combining sweet milk chocolate and spicy red fruit layers, with notes of blueberry, brandied cherry and cinnamon stick. Though serious in stature, it is also quite precocious, and is already revealing its considerable charms.
