John Duval Wines
John Duval crafts intense wines that are as complex and distinctive as the diverse terroir of his treasured Barossa Valley. A world renowned winemaker, his experience and deft touch are unrivaled in Barossa - the Napa of Australia.
John Duval is one of Australia’s most highly-regarded winemakers. As Chief Winemaker and custodian of Australia’s famous Grange, he was instrumental in establishing Penfolds as one of the world’s great wineries. Inspired by the Barossa Valley’s old vine vineyards, John established his own label in 2002 and now crafts intense, focused wines that are as distinctive as the region's diverse terroir.
The Barossa Valley is arguably the center of the Australian wine industry today, and has a rich cultural history. Gnarled old vines, many planted by German and English settlers in the 1840's, thrive in a warm, continental climate, with ample sunshine hours allowing the small berries to reach optimum ripeness and flavor concentration. While access to this scarce, old-vine fruit is fiercely guarded, Duval's long-established vigneron relationships and intimate knowledge of Barossa's sub-regions ensures he has a rich palate from which to craft his wines.
John Duval's multi-layered wines offer a degree more finesse than expected from modern Barossa reds. Without excesses of oak or alcohol, these intense, richly textured wines display rare clarity and precision. Beautifully poised old-vine Barossa wine at the top of its game.
- Accolades: John Duval’s resume includes being named UK Wine and Spirit Competition’s International Winemaker of the Year and receiving Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year award.
- USA: Duval is a vintner partner in the Washington state winery Long Shadows.
- Sheep: As a child, John Duval worked on his family’s world famous sheep stud farm near Adelaide in South Australia.
