Acorn Winery

Acorn Winery

Known for their traditional field-blended wines, these food-friendly wines fully express the fruit characteristics of the diverse grape varieties grown at their Alegria Vineyards in Sonoma County's Russian River Valley.

Acorn is renowned for producing estate-grown, sustainably-farmed, traditional field-blends where the grapes are interplanted, harvested, and fermented together, creating approachable, food-friendly wines made in the old-world style. Located in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County, California, Acorn has won numerous awards for its wines.

Acorn produces its wines from historic vineyards dating from 1890. Originally part of the Sotoyome Land Grant, it was settled in the 1850’s by a family from Virgina. From 1896 into the 1920’s, the vineyard was owned by a woman winemaker, Elizabeth Moes.

Acorn’s mix of inter-planted varieties evolved over the years; when a vine died and was replaced, it wasn’t necessarily replaced with the same variety, resulting in a unique varietal mix.

Betsy and Bill Nachbaur named their vineyard “Alegría” in 1990 when they purchased the property. The winery name "Acorn" was chosen later, in reference to the oaks on the property, their small size, and the fact that all their wines are made in oak barrels. Their first wine, a Sangiovese, was released in 1994. Twenty years later, they continue a long tradition by sustainably growing premium quality grapes and producing acclaimed award-winning wines.

  • History: This small, family-owned winery produces award-winning reds from historic vineyards dating from 1890.
  • Estate-grown: Acorn wines are produced from the grapes grown in Alegría Vineyards which surround the winery on all sides.
  • Vineyard: “Alegría” means happiness and joy in Spanish.
  • Field-Blended: Every Acorn wine is field blended — a process where multiple grape varieties are grown together, harvested together, crushed, and co-fermented.
  • Proprietors: Betsy and Bill Nachbaur purchased the property in 1990 and released their first wine, a Sangiovese, in 1994.
